Johnny: Grandpa, what is ecology? Grandpa: It’s a science. It studies the distribution and abundance of organisms and their interactions with their environment. Johnny: What? Grandpa: I mean it studies the relationships between plants and animals and, the places where they live. Johnny: But, what is science? Grandpa: Science is the observation, identification and description of the phenomena of the universe, to give an explanation of them. Johnny: The universe? Grandpa: Yes. Mainly, our world, but also all what is in the outer space. I mean, our planet and the rest of planets and stars. Johnny: So, science can study everything. Grandpa: All what is susceptible of some sort of check or proof. Science needs to make precise statements. Johnny: To know what is true or untrue. So, things that are not true can be called fiction. Grandpa: You are very smart Johnny. Johnny: But, this word, ecology, where does it come from? Grandpa: It comes from Greek and, a German called Ernst Haeckel coined it in 1866. It means “study of the house”. Johnny: Because the environment is the house for men, animals and plants. Grandpa: I repeat it. You are very smart Johnny.
